The House passed legislation by voice vote on Monday intended to increase cybersecurity at the Small Business Administration (SBA) and separately approved a bill to help small businesses defend against cyber attacks.

Citing a lack of oversight and accountability, Colorado District 6 Representative Jason Crow took a broad public stance today, July 3, against the privatization of immigrant detention. He is calling for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to end its contracts with private prison companies such as the GEO Group, which runs the immigrant detention facility in Aurora.

Following continued reports coming out of the Aurora ICE facility of poor conditions, Rep. Jason Crow (CO-06) this week partnered with Rep. Joe Neguse (CO-02) to request an oversight hearing on the GEO private detention facility in Aurora.

WASHINGTON - This morning, Representative Jason Crow's (CO-06) amendment in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to prohibit the Department of Defense from supporting child separation from their parents passed the House Armed Services Committee.

Crow's amendment would prohibit defense funding to be used to house children forcibly separated from their parents.

"My amendment ensures that our nation's military facilities focus on our common defense -- not the cruel whims of this President," said Crow.

House Democrats are pushing for the ability to drop by immigration detention centers and check out the conditions — an opportunity that has repeatedly eluded some legislators in the past.

Colorado Rep. Jason Crow, a freshman Democrat, is leading the charge, joined by progressives like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley. The group of 20 Democrats sent a letter to the House Appropriations Subcommittee for Homeland Security on Friday that asks to include language in a budget bill that would allow them to tour Immigration and Customs Enforcement detention facilities with 48-hour notice.

The late John Dingell's biography is an inspiring one. He joined Congress as one of the youngest representatives, only to leave as the longest-serving member. Prior to that, he served his country during World War II. Throughout his career, he fought for health care reform introducing his own national health insurance bill at the start of each Congress. And while Michigan was his home, I would be remiss not to mention that he was born in Colorado.

To be clear, I did not personally know John Dingell. In Congress — as in life — he served ahead of me.
