Reps. Crow, Wild Reintroduce the Capitol Remembrance Act
Legislation Comes On the Heels of the Second Anniversary of the January 6 Attack on the U.S. Capitol
WASHINGTON – Today, Representative Jason Crow (CO-06) and Representative Susan Wild (PA-07) reintroduced legislation to erect a memorial to the January 6, 2021 attacks on the U.S. Capitol, honoring law enforcement agencies and individuals who secured the complex and delivered members of Congress to safety.
“Two years after January 6th, we see one of the darkest chapters of our nation’s history as democracy’s defining moment – not its last. As leaders responsible for these attacks spread extremism here and beyond our borders, we must be very clear. The best of America was there and will always rise to uphold our democracy,” said Congressman Jason Crow. “I’m proud to reintroduce the Capitol Remembrance Act, creating a memorial deserved by our fallen and surviving heroes, and for future generations to learn of their service to our country. Our republic for which it stands, stands stronger today for their sacrifice.”
“For more than two centuries the United States exhibited one of the most crucial requirements of democracy—a peaceful transition of power. The insurrection of January 6th brought an end to that unbroken transition, and must be remembered as a warning to Americans as to what happens when violent, anti-democratic rhetoric is given a platform,” said Congresswoman Susan Wild. “Rep. Crow and I are re-introducing the Capitol Remembrance Act to honor the brave heroes who protected American democracy, some of whom with their lives, and to ensure future generations never forget that our democracy is only as strong as our commitment to it.”
First introduced in March of 2021, the Crow-Wild Capitol Remembrance Act would help ensure history never forgets the brave men and women who held the fabric of our nation together in the face of a violent insurrection as we continue defending democracy.
Crow and Wild were joined by 11 original cosponsors in introducing the legislation.
The Capitol Remembrance Act directs the Architect of the Capitol to install an educational exhibit in the U.S. Capitol that would include:
- A plaque honoring law enforcement agencies that participated in protecting the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021; the sacrifice of heroes including U.S. Capitol Police Officers Brian Sicknick and Howard Liebengood, Metropolitan Police Department Officers Jeffrey Smith, Gunther Hashida, and Kyle DeFreytag, and those who sustained injuries; and the Capitol staff that helped restore the Capitol complex after the attack;
- The preservation of property damaged during the attack on the U.S. Capitol; and
- The inclusion of existing photographs and/or the commissioning of a new painting depicting the attack.
