Crow Demands Answers and Accountability from Department of Homeland Security as Aurora ICE Facility Troubles Mount and Officials Refuse Access
This morning, Crow sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security regarding public health concerns at Geo Group facility in Aurora; denied entry to tour facility
Following concerns from community groups including Immigration Justice, Colorado People's Alliance (COPA), ACLU of Colorado, Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and Casa de Paz, among others regarding the ICE facility run by GEO Group in Aurora, Rep. Jason Crow sent a letter to the Department of Homeland Security. The full text of the letter is available here.
In the letter, Rep. Crow raised questions over the state of the facility, in light of its recent expansion and concerns about the public health risk the facility poses to the detainees and first responders. Following the letter, Rep. Crow visited the facility requesting a tour of the space to learn more. He was denied entry and was told by officials that he could only visit if approved by the facility.
"Over the past few weeks, we have heard multiple reports of viral outbreaks that have led to quarantines, a lack of responsive medical care, and disconcerting living conditions in the ICE facility," said Rep. Crow. "In trying to visit the facility today, we hoped to get an accurate and unvarnished understanding of the conditions inside. We are currently following up with DHS to determine when we will be able to visit, but in light of such stories, the inability to access raises concerns about oversight."
