Crow Calls for the Abolishment of Private, For-Profit Immigration Detention Centers
Move comes after ICE denies responsibility for medical care at private detention facilities
GEO Group, which runs the Aurora Detention Facility, is one of the biggest for-profit prison operators in the world
Following reports of the deplorable conditions at private, for-profit immigration detention centers across the nation, Rep. Jason Crow (CO-06) called for ICE to end its contract with private prison contractors.
“Private, for-profit detention centers have become a stain on our American values. Since taking office, I have fought for accountability and called on this administration to respect the dignity of all people.
“We have an immigration detention system that is driven by corporate greed. This system has allowed corporations like GEO Group to cut corners on necessary medical care and safety to benefit their bottom line.
“It is not enough to demand transparency, we must demand accountability. We cannot allow ICE to hide behind private companies to justify continued abuses. It is time for the for-profit immigration detention system to end.”
The call comes following ICE’s response to Crow’s February 28th letter where they denied responsibility for medical conditions: “IHSC [ICE Health Service Corps] does not have medical authority in facilities where it does not operate the medical clinic.”
