Congressman Jason Crow Votes to Reinforce Voting Rights for Coloradans

August 24, 2021

WASHINGTON – Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06) today voted to pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act (H.R. 4) to protect American voters from discrimination by restoring and strengthening the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA). This critical legislation will restore key protections of the VRA which were gutted by the Supreme Court in the 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision and more recently in the 2021 Brnovich v. DNC decision.

"The right to vote has been sacred to our country since our founding. But since the Big Lie, states across the country have tried to enact restrictive, anti-voter laws. It's never been more urgent than it is today to protect the right to vote," said Congressman Jason Crow. "I was proud to help pass the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, named in honor of my friend and mentor, the great John Lewis. Today we are taking a critical step in the right direction to ensure more Americans have access to their fundamental right to vote."

The passage of this legislation comes amid the most coordinated state-level effort to restrict the right to vote in generations and follows a months-long investigation by the House Committee on Administration and House Committee on the Judiciary into the status of voting rights in America.

Since the beginning of the year, hundreds of restrictive voting laws have been introduced in Republican-controlled state legislatures. These efforts have seen dozens of these bills become law in 18 states, including Florida, Georgia, and Arizona.

Congressman Crow has been a longtime advocate for good government and voter access. Crow helped pass a previous version of H.R. 4 in the House of Representatives during the 116th Congress. That bill stalled in the Republican-controlled Senate. As his first bill, Crow introduced the End Dark Money Act, a bill to crack down on dark money spending and make elected officials accountable to those they represent.
