Congressman Crow Statement on Department of Defense Efforts to Protect Abortion Care Access for U.S. Servicemembers

March 2, 2023

Crow: “The servicemembers who fight for us should not have to fight for basic health care.”

WASHINGTON — Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), former Army Ranger and member of the House Pro-Choice Caucus, released the following statement applauding the Department of Defense’s (DOD) continued action to protect access to abortion care for servicemembers and their families in support of the recruitment, readiness, and retention of the U.S. Armed Forces.

DOD’s policy changes come after Crow’s efforts to improve servicemembers’ access to abortion care and other reproductive health services, including approving leave for abortion care, reimbursing the servicemember’s travel expenses, and guaranteeing privacy protections.

In a statement, Congressman Crow said:

“After the Supreme Court’s extreme and dangerous decision to overturn a woman’s fundamental right to an abortion, servicemembers struggled to access basic reproductive health care. I applaud the Department of Defense for moving to protect our servicemembers and mitigate recruitment, readiness, and retention challenges. The servicemembers who fight for us should not have to fight for basic health care. I will continue to protect our servicemembers’ fundamental rights so they can continue to serve with honor and distinction.”
