Congressman Crow Statement on Aurora ICE Custody Death Investigation Developments

August 16, 2023

Crow: “Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.”

AURORA — Today, Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06) released this statement following the release of a 911 call from the GEO Aurora ICE Processing Center related to the death of Nicaraguan asylum seeker Melvin Ariel Calero-Mendoza, an individual detained at the facility. This is the latest development in the investigation of Mr. Calero-Mendoza’s death.

This development follows Congressman Crow’s ongoing efforts for transparency, accountability, and oversight of the GEO Aurora ICE Processing Center, including sending twoletters last year calling for the release of additional information into the death of Mr. Calero-Mendoza. Crow has also called on the Biden Administration to end federal contracts with private, for-profit detention facilities like the GEO Aurora ICE Processing Center.

In a statement, Congressman Crow said:

“Oversight of Aurora’s ICE Processing Center has been one of my priorities in Congress. That’s why I have repeatedly requested information on the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Melvin Ariel Calero-Mendoza, an individual detained at the facility.

“My office has reviewed the 911 call from the Aurora ICE Processing Center related to Mr. Calero-Mendoza’s death. It is clear that the inability to quickly provide crucial information regarding the patient and facility access led to a delay in the delivery of emergency medical care.

“My office continues to seek additional information regarding the care provided to Mr. Calero-Mendoza and to understand what training is provided to facility staff to respond appropriately to medical emergencies.

“Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. My condolences remain with Mr. Calero-Mendoza’s family.”
