Congressman Crow Introduces Legislation to Block Musk from Accessing Americans’ Personal and Financial Data
New bill would stop unlawful access to systems that administer tax refunds, Social Security and Medicare
WASHINGTON — Congressman Jason Crow (D-CO-06) has introduced legislation, along with more than 100 of his colleagues, to prevent the unlawful access to Americans’ most sensitive personal information. This bill comes in response to Elon Musk and Republicans' gaining access to payment systems that administer Social Security and Medicare benefits, as well as tax refunds.
“I’ve heard from hundreds of Coloradans who are concerned about Elon Musk’s intrusion into their private data. Anyone unaccountable to the American people – including Musk and his associates – should not have access to sensitive payment systems and information. That’s why I’ve helped introduce the Taxpayer Data Protect Action to stop this unlawful access to payment systems that tens of millions of Americans rely on for Social Security, Medicare benefits and tax returns,” said Congressman Crow.
This Taxpayer Data Protection Act would limit the Treasury Secretary’s authority to provide access to sensitive Department systems only to those who have lawful authorization, including officers, employees, or contractors of the Department of Treasury – not “Special Government Employees.” Those accessing these systems will also possess an appropriate security clearance, be clear of any conflicts of interest, and have appropriate cybersecurity training.
This bill would also require the Inspector General of the Department of the Treasury to investigate and report to Congress on any investigation into unauthorized use or access, including a description of any payment interference and a risk assessment of any threat to privacy, national security, cybersecurity, or the integrity of the system.
The legislation builds on Congressman Crow’s long record of providing more accountability and transparency in government. He has been opposed to President Trump and Elon Musk’s efforts to dismantle our government and shortchange the American people for their own benefit.
