WASHINGTON — Congressman Jason Crow (CO-06), combat veteran and member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force (GVPTF) and Congressional Dads Caucus, introduced a resolution designating June 21 as National Asking Saves Kids (ASK) Day – a day to share the message of safe firearms storage and to encourage parents to ask if their children will be visiting a home with an unsecured gun. June 21 is the start of the summer when children are out of school and tend to spend more time at the homes of friends and families.

Firearms are the leading cause of death among children and teens in this country. In the United States, over 4.6 million children live in homes with access to unsecured guns, and as a result, thousands of children are injured or killed every year. Among children, 85% of unintentional shooting deaths occur in the home. Additionally, more than 75% of school shootings are facilitated by kids having access to unsecured and/or unsupervised firearms at homes.

Today’s resolution builds on Congressman Crow’s longstanding fight for lifesaving measures to end gun violence in our communities, including to ensure proper implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities law – the first comprehensive gun safety reform package in nearly 30 years. In April, Congressman Crow highlighted congressional inactionand the growing need for meaningful legislation in the 25 years since the tragic Columbine High School massacre. He continues to be a strong voice in support of a national assault weapons ban and ending the Senate filibuster to move forward on addressing the crisis.

In the video, Congressman Crow said:

“Every year on the first day of summer, we observe Asking Saves Kids Day. Summer is a time when many children are out of school and spending more time at home and at the homes of others, often with less structured or supervised time.

“Today on ASK Day, we remind parents, guardians, and caretakers to ask: ‘is there an unlocked gun where my child plays?’ It's a simple question, but it could save a life.

4.6 million children in the United States live in a home with at least one unlocked and loaded firearm. Every year, 350 children unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else.

So today and all year round, it's crucial to remember to keep the little ones in your life safe and always ask.
