February 28, 2020

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society has announced the 27 finalists(link is external) for this year's Citizen Honors Awards by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. Brendan Bialy and Kendrick Castillo, students of STEM School in Highlands Ranch, have been nominated for the Act of Heroism Award which recognizes Americans who accomplish extraordinary feats of heroism by risking their lives for the benefit of others in a dire situation. Brendan Bialy and Kendrick Castillo are two of the students who helped subdue a gunman at the STEM school last May. Mr. Castillo was killed in the shooting.

"Brendan and Kendrick's selfless act of heroism to save their classmates represents the best of our country. Kendrick made the ultimate sacrifice for his classmates and he died an American hero, it is a debt that no medal or recognition could ever repay," said Rep. Jason Crow. "No student should ever have to live through or show the acts of courage that Brendan and Kendrick did that day. Their service and sacrifice still weighs heavily upon our community but we are inspired by their example."

The honorees receive this award from a group of Americans whose actions have defined the words courage and selfless service — the living members of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.(link is external) These brave Americans have received the Medal of Honor for their acts of valor performed during wartime and present the Citizen Honors awards to Americans who are showing courage and dedicating themselves to service here at home.

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society was chartered by Congress in 1958 to create a brotherhood among the living Medal of Honor recipients; to protect and uphold the dignity and honor of the Medal; to promote patriotism and love of country; and to inspire our youth to become worthy and dedicated citizens of our nation. Its membership consists exclusively of those individuals who have received the Medal of Honor. Today, there are 72 living recipients of the Medal of Honor.
